Key SBTi Approval Brings Abt Closer to Net-Zero Emissions Goal

Body

Abt Global’s net-zero target has been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This approval came less than a year after SBTi validated Abt’s near-term emissions reduction target, and represents a key step to meeting the global Business Ambition for 1.5°C commitment we made in October 2021 to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

The SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the UN Global Compact, World Resources Institute, and WWF. Together, they define, assess, and promote best practices in science-based emissions target setting. Their validation means Abt’s emissions goals, once achieved, will contribute to meeting the Paris Agreement's central goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, which climate science indicates is critical to preventing the most damaging effects of climate change.

The following are Abt’s official targets:

  • Overall Net-Zero Target: Abt Global commits to reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the value chain by 2050 from a 2019 base year.
  • Near-Term Target: Abt Global commits to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 38.6 percent by 2027 from a 2019 base year. Abt Global also commits to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from fuel- and energy-related activities, business travel, and employee commuting 38.6 percent within the same timeframe.
  • Long-Term Targets
Abt Global commits to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90 percent by 2050 from a 2019 base year. Abt Global commits to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from fuel and energy related activities, business travel, and employee commuting 90 percent within the same timeframe.

The targets for Scope 1 and 2 emissions from Abt’s operations are consistent with reductions required to keep warming to 1.5°C. Abt’s target for Scope 3 emissions from our value chain (e.g., emissions from our partners in joint operations, our use of supply chains) meet SBTi’s criteria for ambitious value chain goals, meaning it is in line with current best practice. We will continue to reassess our target every five years—or as targets are met—to expand our ambition and actions.

The latest evidence makes it clear that more needs to be done—and faster—to avoid the worst impacts of climate change and protect lives and livelihoods. The next few years are critical, and companies like Abt have a vital role to play in helping achieve transformation at the pace and scale that is needed.
