Exclusive-Gas Infrastructure Across Europe Leaking Planet-Warming Methane - Video Footage

Body

Reuters/EuroNews: In this article, Abt Global’s Jonathan Dorn discussed ways to address leaking methane—a greenhouse gas—in industrial gas facilities across the European Union (EU). According to the reporters, while methane is the biggest cause of climate change after carbon dioxide (CO2), the main component of natural gas, and over 80 times more potent than CO2 in its first 20 years in the air, the EU does not regulate methane emissions in the energy sector. Worse, as noted in the story, many facilities in the EU are leaking methane due to cracks in the physical plants and other mechanical issues, contributing to even greater concentrations of emissions beyond those released in the production of oil and gas.

The good news, says Dorn, is “If there are cracks in the storage tanks, it is a relatively easy fix to patch the tanks.” Dorn’s work at Abt includes focusing on emissions related to power generation. Additionally, the article notes that the EU is looking at legislation to regulate methane emissions.

His baby daughter melts his heart. Scientists say she's changing his brain, too.

Fathers spending more time with their newborn children doesn’t just have emotional and logistical impacts; there are physiological changes as well. In this article, author Arianna Rodriquez looks at the benefits of paternity leave, not only in terms of neurological changes but also in improving paternal behaviors, bonding, and overall family dynamics. But paid parental leave is not uniformly offered, and the Family and Medical Leave Act only guarantees unpaid, job-protected leave for eligible parents working at companies with at least 50 employees. Rodriquez cites a report from Abt indicating that financial constraints prevent many eligible individuals (about 66 percent of eligible people) from taking advantage of leave when it is available. Despite the proven advantages of paternity leave, only 11 states and the District of Columbia have implemented laws ensuring paid family and medical leave, leaving many parents without this crucial support and the benefits that can accrue from using it.
