HIGHLIGHTS
- Limited Government of Nigeria (GoN) resources spent on malaria
- Improve GoN expenditure tracking and increase domestic resource mobilisation
- Results are expected in 2024
The Challenge
Efficient resource mobilisation, allocation and utilisation are important to improve the health outcomes of a population and achieve universal health coverage. Currently, there is limited capacity in Nigeria to determine whether the health system uses scarce resources equitably and efficiently and releases funds available to target malaria. Access to timely and complete data that reflect the magnitude and flow of resources into the health sector is critical to achieving health goals.
The Approach
Abt Global provides technical assistance to the Support to the National Malaria Programme (SuNMaP) and the GoN to improve expenditure tracking and increase domestic resource mobilization for malaria in Nigeria. To date, we have finalised programme thematic area strategy documents for both expenditure tracking and domestic resource mobilisation. In preparation for expenditure tracking, we have explored data quality assurance assessments. We have conducted workshops with national and state stakeholders to identify gaps in resources and necessary activities to implement.
The Results
The £34 million, six-year project began in January 2019. By completion in 2024, the programme aims to achieve:
- 70% of the population sleeping under an insecticide-treated net.
- 70% of eligible children receiving seasonal malaria chemoprevention.
- 40% of children 6-59 months with fever in the previous two weeks receiving a diagnostic test.
- 50% of children under five with any malaria treatment receiving artemisinin-based combination therapy.
- an increased proportion of total annual malaria expenditure coming from domestic sources.
