BETHESDA, MD — Abt Global has endorsed the nine Principles for Digital Development, which serve as living guidelines for the design of technology-enabled international development programs. The company joins a growing list of organizations, including the U.S. Agency for International Development and the World Health Organization, that have signed on to the effort to capture the most important lessons learned in implementing information and communications technology in development.
The Principles include designing technology with user input, being data-driven, considering the long-term sustainability of the technology, as well as using open standards, among other guidelines. For the full list of Principles, visit: the nine Principles for Digital Development.
“As a data-driven company, we look forward to working collaboratively with others in the fields of technology and international development to advance these guidelines,” said Abt President and CEO Kathleen Flanagan. “These Principles are vital to Abt Global' mission of improving the quality of life and economic well-being of people worldwide.”
One example of Abt Global embracing the Principles in practice is the health facilities information sites built under the Strengthening Health Outcomes through the Private Sector (SHOPS) project. The source code for this system is fully available as open source (Principle 6) and was reused and improved (Principle 7) in four Caribbean countries as well as in Tanzania.
