EPA and Abt Global Extend Partnership to Reduce Methane Emissions Under New $7M Contract

Body

Rockville, Md.  –  Methane is a potent, short-lived greenhouse gas that’s responsible for almost half of the current observed rise in global temperatures. Recognizing the need to reduce emissions—as well as the outsized benefits of doing so—Abt Global has provided more than a decade of support to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s international methane mitigation efforts. Building on this decade-long partnership, which has produced services ranging from methane quantification tools to action planning to technical assistance with mitigation efforts, Abt and the EPA have entered into a new $7 million, three-year contract. Abt will support EPA in its role as a lead partner in the Global Methane Initiative, an international partnership focused on advancing cost-effective methane recovery from the oil and gas, coal mining, and biogas sectors.

Through this latest contract, Abt will help national and subnational governments implement emissions reduction commitments under the Global Methane Pledge. Examples of support Abt will provide include developing screening tools, supporting strategic communications, coordinating engagement with international stakeholders, and designing and executing emissions mitigation programs in priority countries.

“Abt has long believed that immediate reductions in methane are a necessary step in reaching global warming goals,” said Abt Principal Associate Joe Donahue. “We’re ready to build on our successes with EPA as, together, we help countries around the world address their methane challenges.”
