The Challenge
Households around the U.S. face growing housing affordability challenges. While there are important roles for the federal and state governments to play in addressing this problem, many of the most critical policy solutions can only be adopted at the local level.
The Approach
Through the National Community of Practice on Local Housing Policy, Abt and the NYU Furman Center met regularly over the course of two years with a working group of 14 practitioners and policy experts to develop an approach for guiding local governments in developing more effective housing strategies. Based on their guidance, and input from a national advisory council of over 40 organizations, Abt and the NYU Furman Center developed LocalHousingSolutions.org, an online guide to local housing policy.
The Results
LocalHousingSolutions.org provides stakeholders in cities around the U.S. with the information needed to create comprehensive and balanced local housing strategies. The website provides in-depth information on more than 80 local housing policies and guidance on how to compile multiple housing policies into a comprehensive and balanced local housing strategy.
